"1984" story by Truman

    Government. Such an interesting noun. It has so many different forms. It can control you, it can liberate you. It can help you, it can hinder you. In the worlds of 1984 and The Truman Show, the government believes that they are helping, but they are actually causing harm.  

    In 1984 by George Orwell, the government singles in on Winston Smith's life. They watch every step that Winston takes. They manipulate every move he makes. He is under a constant watch by the government. Even the people that enter Winston's life were put there by the government. Nothing that happened in Winston's life was made by his own moves. The government made them for him. 

    In The Truman Show, a movie with Jim Carrey, the government singles in on Truman's life. His life is literally shown on television. Every move that Truman makes is manipulated by the government. Even the people that are in Truman's life are put there by the government. Nothing happens in Truman's life that is his own. The government made his life for him. The government made his world.

Cell Phones or Telescreens

I woke up this morning and the first thing I saw was my cell phone. My alarm went off, and then I proceeded to do my morning ritual. I go to the list of notifications and start clearing away the ones I don't need to worry about. Then I start from the top. Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter...etc... My cell phone knows everything about me. It knows when I get up, what my favorite apps are, who my favorite contacts are. Not to mention that it is with me twenty for seven. I am never not with my phone. It could have a hidden camera showing some random person what I do with my life daily.

Sounds like a telescreen to me.

Winston Smith woke up this morning and the first thing that saw him was his telescreen. The alarm went off and then he proceeded to do his morning ritual. He got his feet out from under his bed and slowly got himself up. He started from the top and worked his way down. He worked on stretching his back and mobilizing himself with the help of his telescreen. His telescreen know everything about him. It knows when he gets up, what his favorite music is, and who his favorite person is (Big Brother). Not to mention that there is a telescreen wherever Winston goes, He is never not around a telescreen. It is like having a hidden camera showing some random person what you do with your life daily.

2+2=5

2+2=4
    We have been told this since the age five, maybe even younger. It is a fact. If you hold up two fingers and then add two more you then have four fingers. If you go to the bakery with two cookies and leave with two more, you have four cookies. This fact can be expressed in every way possible. It will never change. Then why question it if there can be no other answer?
    Imagine you are a fly. You are a very small organism living in a very large one. The large one controls your surroundings. The sun rises in the mornings and sets in the evening. When it rains, you are wet, and when it snows you are cold. These things never change, but how do you know this? How do you know that the sun rises in the morning and sets in the evening? How do you know that rain makes you wet? You know these events occur because the larger party tells you they do.
   So ask yourself, how do you know two and two equal four. Why not five? Imagine being told that the answer to 2+2=5 when you were young. It has been engraved into your head that this is the answer no matter what. Isn't that the same as being told the answer is four?
    Now imagine you are the fly again, but now the larger party tells you that the sun rises in the evening and sets in the morning. They have told you this since you where born. They have enforced this information into your brain. Do you actually believe that these events are true? Does the sun really rise in the evening and set in the morning? I am sorry to say but, that answer is up to you. It is up to you to figure out what your freedoms are. What your liberties are. All I can say is that "Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two makes four. If that is granted, all else follows."(Orwell p.81).
